Becoming a stylist

This is what the British College of Professional Styling has to say:

‘You’ll find the stylist at work with advertising agencies, magazines, production companies, Internet publishers and advertisers, celebrities, catwalk models, photographers, fashion shows, recording companies, TV shows, commercials, catalogues, editorial work, public appearances, concert performances and music videos. Many more stylists make an excellent living from image consultancy and personal shopping services. Or, food styling and visual merchandising.’

And the important summing up:

‘Stylists know how to create the look, develop the image and identify and interpret current and future fashion trends.’

Some successful stylists feel that paper qualifications are unhelpful and that the best way in is to seek an internship with an established designer or stylist whose work you admire, and then work your way up by hard work. Helping yourself to some of the said stylist’s contacts and clients is probably not unknown either. If you have trained as a theatrical costumier and want to get into fashion, or if you are a fashion designer who yearns for something more theatrical, a career as a stylist might well be of interest.
